Negotiation capability for leaders who need control, not compromise

Executive Summary
Negotiation is a leadership capability with direct impact on value, risk, speed, and relationships. Yet many organisations still negotiate by instinct rather than intent — shifting unconsciously between collaboration, competition, and confrontation.
This article explores how high-performing leaders make deliberate negotiation choices based on incentives, risk, and long-term value. It outlines the strengths and hidden costs of each negotiation approach, explains why unplanned concessions are one of the most persistent sources of value leakage, and shows how structured negotiation capability delivers measurable return on investment.
For organisations operating in complex, high-pressure environments, negotiation excellence is no longer optional. It is a strategic advantage.

Trump's Negotiation Gambit: Redefining Global Power in 100 Days

The return of Donald Trump to the White House sets the stage for one of the most aggressive geopolitical negotiation plays in modern history. Facing a narrow 100-day window before Congress can counter his moves, Trump is expected to act swiftly, leveraging Ukraine, Russia, NATO, China, and the Middle East as bargaining chips to reconfigure global power dynamics.

Trump’s Global Strategy Through the Lens of Negotiation and Double Thinking

Understanding Donald Trump’s approach to leadership, both in business and global politics, requires a negotiator’s mindset. His "America First" policy is often seen as either a bold correction of global imbalances or a reckless retreat from leadership. But what if it is both?

By applying double thinking—the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory ideas at once—we can see how Trump’s actions are both strategically rational and high-risk. More importantly, we can analyze his approach as a negotiation: one where leverage, pressure, and unpredictability are central to his tactics.

Let’s explore this paradox through the lens of negotiation strategy, power dynamics, and global influence.

How Businesses Can Negotiate Smarter in a World of Tariffs

Key Takeaways (For Busy Readers!)

Tariffs are often used as political tools, not just economic policies. Both McKinley and Trump leveraged them to influence trade negotiations.

Rigid planning isn’t enough. Companies must prioritise preparation, ensuring they can adapt to shifting trade policies.

Negotiation skills are critical. Businesses that master strategic alliances, the Persuasion Paradox, and value-based negotiation can turn protectionist policies into opportunities.

Scotwork’s expert negotiation training helps businesses develop the agility to thrive in uncertain trade environments.

Have you ever tried out a simulator, not only on a computer with a joystick or a mouse, but physically sitting in one, flying or driving a plane or a vehicle?

I have actually tried a lot of them over the years, even tried sitting in a pilot flight simulator for the 1970s to more modern once like driving a race car.

I have also been a game master when you played D&D and other more complicated games with rulebooks with enough rules to take a bachelor's degree.

It’s quite interesting to see that some companies are having a field day while others are trying to stay alive.

When I reach out to different clients I get all kind of interactions, some are closed down, others are run by a skeleton crew, some are conducting business as before, while others are in a rush, and can barely keep up with demands.

One conclusion is that we are all trained to argue and to try and persuade others into seeing the world as we do, and if they don’t, try harder, if necessary, use force.

Most sales trainings that I have attended in my life has the same concept and build on the perception to persuade, or by manipulation, get you what you want.

Well, here we are, and things has not developed quite as you have expected it to do, so what now, what are your plans, and is there anything else you can do to improve your situation?

It is quite common that plans, strategies, and tactics do not always develop the way we expect and, as in most cases, different factors will have an impact on your business.

In most cases it’s something you did not see coming, or even if you did, it was not as great a problem, but in combination with a few other happenings, it can become devastating.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you have been lied to, or worse, where you have lied or at least painted a better picture of the truth?

Well you are not alone, a majority of people on both sides lies or at least gives the impression that topics and issues are better or worse than what you should expect.

Many of the topics people or organizations discuss when it comes to reaching an agreement and results that would be favorable for both sides are in many cases not the whole truth.

It is always nice to meet family and friends over some nice food and wine, it’s also nice to enjoy being together and see the grandchildren and getting to know them better.

I sometimes wonder what world my grandchildren will be growing up in and if they one day will come and ask us about some of the events happening around us lately.

The translations of the Latin quote differ, but if I simplify it, I would translate it into “He who dares, wins.”

For those of you who know about military history, you will probably associate the quote with SAS, or Special Air Service as they are called around the world.

Common for all SAS actions are, that in all of them, the initiative and actions are all due to proactive and determent men, who keep on going no matter the odds or circumstances.

It’s all about ceasing the initiative and letting the momentum stay in your favour and to keep the opponent guessing where you are, where you are going and what your goal is.

Well, Brexit is definitely turning in to a nightmare for everyone, it will become a reality show well worth following, and for our historians, something they will analyse for ages.

One thing is for sure, the doom and gloom of Brexit is becoming a reality that most of us has to endure or suffer while we try to conduct our everyday business with hope of success.

I am not sure we will be bailed out if we need some help, especially if things get out of control, the options left are now down to ”No deal” or ”Extension”.

All kinds of relationships can easily become difficult, not necessarily because people are evil or that they have a hidden agenda they are trying to pursue.

Things have a tendency some times to develop in to the wrong direction due to external factors that in the end will affect your business or the relationship you are in.

It's also quite common that business relationships over time take the wrong turn, especially when one side has the power and uses it to push the other one too far, typically over price.

In 1806 Napoléon Bonaparte tried to force England to submission before undertaking an invasion by sea from France.

Napoléons idea was to starve England by blocking British harbours from trading with Europe.

Historically it did not quite go the way it was suppose to go for either party, but in the end it proved vain and England slowly came back trading with all countries and former enemies.

Way back, Monthy Python made a great sketch about a man who would like to pay for arguing, the famous sketch started off with a short dialogue, that suddenly ends with John Cleese saying, "Time is up", and the man answering "No it isn't" and John says "Yes it is".

It is so easy to sometimes fall into the trap of expressing an opinion, and ending up in a furious argument over a principal that none of us will ever back down from.

I quickly replied: business is my pleasure, a remark that can be used once customs are back due to Brexit, just to make it a bit more tricky for them to stop you doing what ever you are doing in England.

Nowadays I do not watch television as much as before, mostly because I hate all the commercials that interrupts all the time, at best I record a film and watch it later, but in most cases I watch Netflix or some other streaming media when it suits me.

The other day I was looking at the German series called "Berlin Babylon", on SVT1, an interesting series in may ways, love watching how people lived in the 1920s-1930s, and how they reacted to the political conditions after the Great war in Berlin.

Most because they do not make it easier to understand, especially when most of their efforts are put into just explaining what is happening and not why things are happening.

The issues they bring up, on both sides, are that the customers are not responding, to long presentations, not addressing the right issues, too much time spent on arguing back and forth, price focus and not listening well enough.
